Hey Kristen, since you weren't in class let's plan a time where we can both get to a computer to work on our google doc. The assignment is due Friday, so let me know asap.
The object of this project is for students to develop cultural understanding by communicating with a peer in another country about their favorite types of food. The Kindergarten students in Kalamazoo will be communicating with kindergartners in London, England. Contact will be made with the pen pals after the entire class has picked three of their favorite foods and brainstormed ideas of what they want to tell their pen pal. In the first letter students will draw a picture of their favorite type of food and describe it. These questions will be written on the board to encourage the students to share more information:
“When do you usually eat this food?” “Who first introduced you to this food?” “Do you know how to cook this food?” “Can you order it at a restaurant?” “What does this food taste like?” “What food group is this food in?” “Is this a healthy or a not healthy food?” “What is the recipe?”
Once the students receive letters they would read about their pen pals favorite food. They will use the computer to research this food and respond to their pen pal with comments and questions of their own. After each student has received at least two letters from their pen pal the class will have a feast day to create some of the student’s favorite foods from London, England. Previous to eating each of the foods, the student will describe what the food is and other information that they learned from their pen pal. After each student has described their pen pal’s favorite food the entire class will try all of the foods. After eating each student will write about their opinion of the food. Then the whole class will discuss how each food tasted. The teacher will ask how the foods are different in London and a Venn diagram will be created on the board. One final pen pal letter will be exchanged with responses to questions and reactions to the food that they tasted.
